A gallery site rebuilt for speed, with a CMS the artist actually uses
James Ainslie has exhibited since 1975 and is represented by galleries across Australia. His site was slow, dated and hard to update. It needed to be rebuilt on a modern framework without changing the look he liked, and with a simple way to manage galleries and artwork.

The situation
The existing site had been built years earlier on a legacy platform. It was slow, hard to maintain and the artist, who described himself as hesitant with technology, could not update it himself. The brief was clear: keep the same style, make it fast, and make adding paintings easy.
What we did
- Rebuilt the site as a modern static website, keeping the original design and layout as requested
- Built a custom content management system for galleries and artworks, designed for a non-technical user, with deployment handled automatically after each change
- Organised the exhibition history, awards and collections (including the Reserve Bank of Australia and Artbank) into a readable About page
- Linked each representing gallery, since purchases go through them rather than the site
The result
A fast, simple gallery site that looks as the artist wanted, with a backend that made managing artwork straightforward. The custom CMS has proven the most valuable part of the project.
